Debate for Peace

This piece is from a new series: “I am in 5 Senses”

I am the colors White and Green. White is the color of the dove of peace carrying in its wings a world free of war and spreading a message of love and hope among people. Green is the color of the olive tree, a symbol of the land’s eternity and peace, whose roots remain deep no matter how the days change. These two colors carry in my heart the meaning of life, peace and hope for a brighter future.

I am the sound of the call to prayer that we hear in the morning and evening, bringing peace to our hearts, the sound of the man who woke us up during the nights of Ramadan so we could prepare for suhoor (pre-fast meal), and the quiet prayers of my mother filled with love, mercy and comfort. 

I am the smell of the delicious Jerusalem ka’ak that fills the streets of Bethlehem and the scent of incense in the Church of the Nativity spreading through Manger Square carrying with it the spirituality of the city and its beauty that brings together history and holiness. 

I am the taste of Palestinian food grown from the land: delicious maqluba filled with potatoes and local cauliflower, and sweet Nabulsi Knafe with local cheese and delicious pistachios. 

I am the feeling of the soft therapy putty that I exercise with every day to strengthen my joints and hands, a feeling that gives me strength and helps me develop my skills with every practice.
